Cause of Death: Can You Catch A Killer? (often shortened to Cause of Death or CoD ) is a video game developed and published by EA Mobile for iOS devices on December 16, 2010 deleted from the App Store in September 2014. Although almost identical in the game, the game is aimed at a more mature audience than its companion game, Surviving High School, because it revolves around crime and serial killers and their pursuit by law enforcers (and the text describes some rather conspicuous and suggestive things). Understandably, the recommended age in the App Store is 12. The Cause of Death is a visual novel that is divided into a series of volumes, each of which consists of eight chapters (excluding first, fourteenth and sixteenth volume). The basic game (which is free from the App Store) comes with all the first Volume - the future content needed to be downloaded either by "Episodes on Demand" or "Now Airing". The first 6 episode volumes were released in December 2010, and the series released its final episode in July 2014, and the game was not listed from the App Store in September 2014 (though people who downloaded the game while it was up can re-download it because the game not deleted by Apple).

Development
This game was conceived in 2004 as the first story game for mobile; This concept was developed before an author joined the team. They found a student at Stanford, who started writing games on a night-by-class basis. This will be the Surviving High School, launched in 2005. The developer team continues this with Cause of Death, and then High School Story, Hollywood U, and Choices, under the name Centerscore, Vivendi Games, EA, and Pixelberry.
It usually takes more than a week to write each chapter of Cause of Death, and because of the exhausting release schedule these writing staff often have to work late at night (sometimes throughout the night), not wanting to disappoint their fans, who can "become anxious when an episode late, even in a matter of hours ". When staff find that "fans are very interested in [their] stories or appreciate [their] work" through Tumblr reviews or Facebook comments, it "makes a big impact in the office", as this is a hard validation of their work.
While some writers worked on the horrific killings that took place throughout the series, they wanted to be entirely immersed in their research, for example filling "their cubicle walls covered with tarot cards and books on voodoo" when writing a paranormal themed episode. "This game is a crime-based spin-off from Surviving High School.Because many CoD writers also work at Surviving High School and switch between the two projects, there is a big difference between light and dark tones, especially in the early years of SHS, which provides a nice change of pace and variation, although initially Cause of Death and Surviving High School were built in two very different ways, over time the SHS was changed to reflect the CoD, into more plots and the story driven characters are rather and are being directed at the target audience the more mature. High School Visual novel engine is repurposed towards a sandy crime drama in Cause of Death Art style is also ch angered to be more realistic, expressive and sandy , and the minigame-style gameplay is replaced by an interactive movie structure. There is at least one crossover between two games, and some characters given from one game have an family members who are only present in other games.
Some choices made by the writing staff have caused a reaction by the audience. In particular, the Blaise-Jeremy couple is considered controversial for some, arguing that it is unrealistic and unreasonable, so the authors explain the reasoning behind it: "There is something important in seeing how opponents are interested in. You see it in the real life of all" Right time. Sweet girls dating. The straight-laced people are chasing free-spirited girls. Sometimes we are secretly looking for people who will push us beyond what we are comfortable with... The BlaiseBird thing is all so refreshingly simple "I think Blaise is fed up with drama and just goes for something she wants, for better or worse. The other people's love life on CoD is so painful and complex, so it's great to have a romantic that is not romantic. "
The authors for this series include Winchester, Georgia, Doc, Lily, Rasputin, and others. They are employed for certain talents as they move away from other areas. For example, in the marriage episode between Natara and Oscar, Winchester's role consists of planning "wedding-themed fights" in action scenes, while Lily does some "grace" [ful] writing. Maltara's kiss at the end of the episode is a difficult moment to write that goes through many concepts, as this is an "interesting" turning point in the series. While "initially, it was a smaller, quieter, only very warm, and honest, and intimate time", team mate Rasputin argued "No. People have been waiting for this for ten volumes. ", so he added" more descriptions, more emotions [and] soft showers ".
This game has a frequently updated Facebook account and Twitter account to provide information about upcoming episodes and other information related to the Cause of Death or High School that Survived. Staying in Secondary Schools (EA) , Cause of Death (EA), High School Story (Pixelberry) set a rare track record of three games by team the same development enters the top 25 charts.
After more than 3 and a half years and 170 content (now widely available as a bundle package), this series ends in July 2014, and the lid announces that the app will be removed from the App Store at any time. Just two months after the game final was released, the game was completely removed from the app store.

Gameplay
Written in second person (where player plays from character's perspective), Cause Death is very passive and gameplay casual wise; it's purely a Visual Novel with the main elements of Interactive Fiction and the classics of Choose Your Own Adventures. The game focuses on storytelling, with a character dialog (or narrative dialog) that appears above the shifted background image to fit the location. Tapping on the screen will move the text forward, and finally, the player must make a decision to say or do something - this is indicated by several options on the screen, and the player must choose one of them.
Most but not all decisions will give the Player a Detective Points if the correct choice is made. During important action or conversation scenes, failure of a number of decisions will cause the player to fail or die; when this happens, the game will show the order of death/non-canon failure (some of which are actually quite detailed) before the player gets Game Over, which requires to return to the last checkpoint or repeat of this chapter. If the player gets 80-100 out of 100 Det. Points, they will get a bonus scene (Volume 1 takes 500-600 Det. Points for all 6 chapters together and only has 1 bonus scene at the end if this is fulfilled). This bonus scene "is usually just a short scene that shows something about a story you would not see otherwise, it's not important that you see it all, but it gives you a sense of accomplishment as you manage it."
The game is "packed with mystery and suspense", and "intended for adults, due to the graphic nature of plots and occasional sexual references". It's "a bit like a" Choose Your Own Adventure "book, but on the iPhone".
Episodic Content System
What distinguishes EA's visual novels (this and Endurance from high school) from others is the fact that their games release new content on a regular basis. There are 2 ways to do this; Now Airing and Episode on Demand. As of July 2011, the episodes were released weekly on Friday; this became weekly on Monday from then until September 2013; episodes began releasing bi-weekly (first on Monday on Wednesdays) from then on.
When an episode is released on On Demand, the previous episode will be available on Now Airing for free (though only one episode of Now Airing can be on iDevice at a time). So On Demand players will experience faster and can freely play their episodes anytime, but pay more. Now the players who show will not pay at all, but they will experience their story more slowly and can only play the episode once.
Story
Cause of Death has a plot inspired by the crime scene investigation television show and is based on solving the murder mystery. Other key themes include friendship, love, trust, morality and criminology. The story is mostly happening in San Francisco, although some there are some situations (especially parts of Volume 11, almost all Volume 15 and most of Volume 16)) occur in other areas. Most of the protagonists are SFPD members (including FBI Agent Natara Williams), while the antagonists are serial killers; some people have unique MO, victimologies, motivations and backstories (especially from tragedy or abuse). Organized crime, finance and politics have all been shown at some point, and crimes that are correlative with the protagonist themselves also play a role in the game storyline. In the previous season (especially the first), the game storyline has a stronger focus on crime and crime than the characters. However, as the game progresses, SFPD members and their character development have become a much more prominent focus.
Volume
Volume 1 is available for free in basic games. The remaining volume is available for purchase as a set at various prices.
