Plot

After Mickey was released from a mental hospital, where his story was considered a lie, he returned to Los Angeles to find a woman named Eve. When he arrives at the bar that bears his name, he is immediately attracted by the new owner, an ex-girl call also named Eve. He told Mickey he bought the bar after the old owner committed suicide, "over several men". The bar is a popular place for visitors looking for a night stand and streetwalker looking for potential johns. Although Eve was also interested in Mickey, he refused to commit to one person, admitted to a French radio talk show host Dr. Nancy Love that she ruined too many weddings to have her own wedding. That evening she refused to reprimand Mickey and sleep with the bartender who had a crush on him, avoiding the rich married man who was having an affair with him.

That night, Dr. Nancy Love answered Eve's ad for a roommate to share her home, and moved the next day. Nancy hid her identity and began to observe her romantic attachment even as she counseled Eve through her radio show. When Hoo's married lover Zack calls in to find her, Nancy asks her thorny questions and begins to suggest relationships, despite the fact that she herself is unable to maintain a successful relationship. Zack in turn continues his pursuit of Eve, though his wife, Pearl, has begun to haunt the Eve bar hoping to catch him with him, unbeknownst to Eve.

Mickey returned to the bar the next night when he could not pay for the bus ticket home to Las Vegas. Pearl asks her opinion of a poem, and when she thinks of her interpretation, Mickey reveals that she teaches poetry, as well as being a photographer and former soldier. Eve was intriguing but cool, and Mickey left when Pearl offered to put her into a hot card game where she could earn money for a return ticket. When he drops her down, Mickey kisses Pearl and asks her to marry him, but he just laughs, calling her crazy, even though he invites her to stop by her place, and gives her Eve's address and phone number. In the game, Mickey won big, angering Pearl's husband, Zack. Zack warns Mickey not to return, before he goes to see Eve, but Eve in turn sends Zack away, telling him their affairs are over.

Mickey goes to Pearl's apartment to fall, and when he wakes up starts taking photos while he sleeps. He had just woken up when Zack came in, still stung from Eve's refusal, and he attacked Mickey, pulled the gun and took back the lost money. She slapped Pearl after Mickey was gone, assuming they slept together. It's implied that Zack often abuses Pearl emotionally and physically and maybe he hopes to catch her husband with Eve so he can finally have a reason to divorce her.

Mickey calls Eve's house, and when Nancy answers the plea to come and crash, close before she realizes who she is. When she arrives Nancy tells her that Eve is not at home, and when she is confused she welcomes the opportunity to bathe and eat when she allows her to enter. He curled up in his suitcase as he showered, finding a memorabilia that showed the truth of his story and his journey.. As she ate, they talked about Eve, but felt her loneliness sweep her into bed, then asked her to marry him and go with him to Las Vegas. Nancy laughs, but tells her that she does not believe she's crazy. Then he told her to leave before she went to work.

Eve telephoned Nancy's radio show from the office above her bar, split between her interest in Mickey and her fear of making a mistake again. The pascapitalist euphoria of Nancy overcame her normal intellectual approach, and she encouraged Eve to surrender, rather than fight, her feelings. So when Mickey comes looking for Eve that night, he's almost ready to give up when Zack shows up and attacks Mickey again. Eve left as they fought, and when she arrived home was suddenly confronted by Nancy, who told her everything. Eve was crushed when Nancy suggested they "share" Mickey's affection, and she told Nancy that she could have it, before rushing out.

Mickey returns to Eve's house to recover her suitcase, and Zack finds her there and attacks her again. But Mickey won, recovered the money and left with his suitcase. He tried to bomb a trip to the bus station but Eve's spy on the rooftop bar, and raced to see it. He pulled a gun and threatened to commit suicide until he did the same; then he broke down and they hugged.

Soon they were on the bus, on their way to Las Vegas, and when a passenger asked if they were gambling, Eve said you could call it that - they just got married.

Critical reaction

The film is well-reviewed in the eighth movie reviews of Pauline Kael's State of the Art: "The love roundelay Choose Me , written and directed by Alan Rudolph, with a budget of $ 835,000, is a delightful banana. These songs are sung by Teddy Pendergrass and he is true. The whole movie has a lilting, loose, choreography stream... [...] This low-budget comedy-fantasy has some of the most entertaining (and best performances ever I see all year. "

The film was screened out of the competition at the Cannes Film Festival 1984.
