Both in Divergene books and film trilogy, factions are social divisions that classify citizens based on their skills and values. Factions are Dauntless, Amity, Erudite (the intelligent), Abnegation (unselfish), and Candor (honest). On the appointed day of the year, all young adults aged sixteen must choose the faction they will devote for the rest of their lives after taking the placement test.
In an interview, Roth described factions as evolving from his original concept of world development. He added Candor to fill "the gap in the reasoning behind the world that needs to be filled."
Many reviews for Divergen novels criticize the social structure that created factions in the novel. For example, Kirkus Review , when talking about the first novel, called the social structure of "unreasonable premise."
There are deficiencies in every faction. The Amity (peace) passive, while the Dauntless (brave) cruel. The Erudite (intelligent) is power-hungry/futile. The Candor (honestly) is inconsiderate. Abnegation (unselfish) is stifling.
