Matthew 6:25 is the twenty-fifth verse of the sixth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament and is part of the Sermon on the Mount. This verse diverts the discussion of one money to one of the concerns.

In the King James Version, the text reads:

Therefore I say to you, Do not think for
your life, what you will eat, or what you will drink;
not yet for your body, what you'll wear. Not
live more than meat, and body from clothing?

The World English Bible translates this section as:

Therefore, let me tell you, do not worry for your life:
what you will eat, or what you will drink; not yet
for your body, what you will wear. Is not life more
of food, and body more than clothing?

For other versions of the collection, see BibRef Matthew 6:25

Jesus had just told his followers that it was impossible to pursue God and wealth. In this verse he begins a discussion about why one should not worry too much about all material things. In this verse Jesus states that there is more to life than food and clothing, and implicitly warns that focusing on these practical concerns can distract from focus on God. This verse is also interpreted as a reminder that God provides a person's life and body so that one should not doubt that he will also provide for survival.

Fowler notes that the early texts were divided on whether the verse includes the question "what will you drink." The absence of this question will make the parallels clearer with the next verses, while questions about food and clothing are answered, this one is not.

The word translated as life can also refer to the soul, but the period authors do not see the difference between the two concepts. So when Jesus declares that one need not worry about one's soul, it is possible that this is meant in the sense of Jewish vitality or power, rather than the Christian theological idea of the soul. So the soul, which in this verse is described as eating or drinking, is more accurately translated as life. The word translated in this verse as eating is the same word often translated as karat in Matthew 6:19.
