Paint (formerly Paintbrush ), commonly known as Microsoft Paint or mspaint , is a simple raster graphic editor that has included with all versions of Microsoft Windows. The program opens and saves files in Windows bitmap (BMP), JPEG, GIF, PNG, and one TIFF format. Programs can be in color mode or two in black and white, but there is no grayscale mode. For simplicity, it quickly became one of the most widely used applications in early versions of Windows, introducing many people to paint on computers for the first time. This is still widely used for simple image manipulation tasks.

In July 2017, Microsoft added Paint to its list of unused Windows features, meaning that it will not be further developed and may be deleted in the future. Microsoft, however, will make it available in Windows Store for free.

History

The first version of Paint was introduced with the first version of Windows, Windows 1.0, in November 1985. It is a licensed version of PC Paintbrush ZSoft Corporation, and supported only 1-bit monochrome graphics with a special "MSP" format. This version was later replaced by Paintbrush in Windows 3.0, with a redesigned user interface, color support and support for BMP and PCX file formats.

Microsoft sends the latest version of Paint with Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, which allows storage and loading of custom color sets as color palette files (.pal) files. This functionality works only correctly if the color depth of the image is 16-bit per pixel (bpp) or higher. The newer Paint version does not support this feature.

In Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows ME, Paint can save images in JPEG, GIF, and PNG formats when appropriate plug-ins are installed. The plug-in is included with Microsoft Office and Microsoft PhotoDraw. It also allows Paint to use a transparent background. Support for PCX files is dropped. Starting with Windows ME, the canvas size extends automatically when larger images are opened or pasted, rather than prompted.

In Windows XP and later, Paint uses GDI and therefore can save images as BMP, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, and PNG without requiring additional graph filters. However, alpha channel transparency is still not supported. Support for obtaining images from the scanner or digital camera is also added to Paint.

In Windows Vista, the toolbar icon and default color palette changed. Paint in Windows Vista can undo changes up to 10 times, compared to 3 in previous versions; it also includes a slider for image magnification and crop function. This version saves in JPEG format by default.

Windows 7 and later

The Paint version in Windows 7 and later, displays the ribbon in the user interface. It also features an "artistic" brush that consists of various shades of gray and some levels of transparency that gives more realistic results. To add realism, the oil and watercolor brushes can only paint for small distances before the user has to click again (this gives the illusion that the paint brush has run out of paint). In addition, Paint can now undo up to 50 subsequent changes. It also has an anti-alias shape, which can be resized freely until they are rastered when other tools are selected. The Windows 8 version of Paint mostly corrects old defects from previous versions involving the inability to scroll windows when editing in a Zoom view over 100%. However, when entering text in Zoom view, users can not move text outside the enlarged viewport when the text window is in edit mode with the mouse or keyboard.

Future

In April 2017 "Creator Update" for Windows 10, Microsoft released Paint 3D with Paint.
