Plot
Despite undergoing what seemed like a successful life, Veronika (Sarah Michelle Gellar) was depressed and could not find meaning in its existence. Intending to commit suicide, he takes overdose, blaming his attempts at suicide on the world's failure to recognize what is "real". She wakes up in an exclusive and expensive psychiatric hospital only to find out that an overdose has made her vulnerable to an aneurism that will kill her in a matter of weeks.
At first, Veronika just wanted to speed up the process, and even visits by her adoptive parents failed to revive her desire for life. Her parents love her, but while they are ready to spend their diminished resources to get help what they can do (not knowing her death is near), they do not really understand it. They do not encourage him to receive a full music scholarship at Juilliard because they want him to earn a degree that can make money for him. They do not see how he is desperate because of their limitations.
Regardless of himself and regardless of his disappointment with his materialistic life, Veronika finds new goals through playing asylum piano and through observation and then connecting with the schizophrenic Edward (Jonathan Tucker). Not only did he recover his own will to live, Veronika helped Edward out of his catatonic status, and the couple soon 'escaped' (Dr. Blake, looking out the window, watching them escape, but not sending anyone to bring them back) from asylum together, determined to enjoy Veronika's last days as a couple.
Veronika did not know that her aneurysm was her unusual psychiatrist's invention. Blake (David Thewlis), who tests his theory that convinces him that he's only weeks to live will restore his health and heal his desire to commit suicide. He explained his treatment by letter to his estranged wife, a colleague from a mental hospital. Most people who attempt suicide repeat their efforts to succeed. As long as he does not know the truth, he theorizes, he will consider every day as if it were his last day and thus appreciate it. This, he notes, is actually true, because no one knows when their end will come.
When Veronika comes out one morning on the bench at sunrise, Edward is sure he has lost her, but his sorrow turns into joy when he wakes up. Celebrating what they believed might be one more day, the couple embraced and walked happily on the beach in the morning light, laughing and holding hands.
