Brompton Bicycle is a British folding bicycle manufacturer based in Greenford, London. Earlier production at Brentford.

Brompton folding bikes and accessories are the company's core products, which are noted for their self-sustaining and standalone size when stored. All available folding bike models are based on the same hinged bicycle framework and the size of a 16-inch (37 × 349 mm) bicycle wheel tire. Components are added, removed, or replaced with titanium parts to form many variations. The modular design has remained unchanged since the original patent filed by Andrew Ritchie in 1979, with minor details enhanced by continuous improvement. Ritchie was awarded the 2009 Prince Philip Designers Prize for working on bicycles. In a folding bike review, Brompton is often the winner.

Brompton is the largest volume bicycle manufacturer in the UK, producing about 40,000 bikes annually. The company also operates a bicycle rental system.

Design

All Brompton folding bike models share the same curved frame, consisting of a hinged main tube, spinning a rear triangle, a fork, and a rod hinged handle rod. The main tubes and rods are made of steel in all models. The rear triangle and fork are steel or titanium, depending on the model. The steel section joins the brazing - not the welding. The wheel measures 349 mm (13.7 inches), carries a tire with 16? tread diameter. Handlebars and some of the peripheral components are aluminum.

Brompton bicycles use more than 1,200 individual pieces, many of which are manufactured solely for Brompton design.

In 2010, the combination allows one, two, three, or six speed gearing options to be installed in the factory, with higher or lower gears available as an option.

The Brompton uses a combination of back crease and suspension design. During the ride, the rear triangle rests on a rubber spring to provide the suspension between the rear wheels and the main frame supporting the rider. The suspension block is stored in compression by the weight of the rider. A factory-equipped suspension block is offered as an alternative to standard blocks for heavier riders or those who want a more responsive ride. There is no suspension for the front wheels, although the Superlight titanium fork provides a small number of springs.

Fold

Elements that allow flip to function are:

  • the back triangle spins, allowing length to be shortened, while keeping the bicycle chain in the same alignment. There is a slight arch in the main frame to allow the wheel to swing down into the parking position;
  • chain tensioner arms capable of swinging through a wide arc, to control the full length of the chain during folding without the chain loosened. In a folded position, the chain is looped back by itself;
  • small wheels above mud and/or rear carrier to enable folding bikes to be rolled;
  • the main frame hinge in the center of the bike allows the front wheels to be swung and fitted to the rear wheels. Since the front wheels are also spinning freely for steering purposes, the front wheels still point ahead even when folded;
  • a handlebar stalk with hinges placed at 45 degrees to the rest of the bike allows the handlebars to swing through 180 degrees and lie parallel to the wheel when folded;
  • post seat incorporates variable height adjustment and locking. When lowered as folded, the base of the post is locked on a lower stop disc that prevents folded packets from being open;
  • pedal fold on the left side.

The last package folded is 565 ÃÆ'â € "545 ÃÆ'â €" 250 mm (22.2 ÃÆ'â € "21.5 ÃÆ'â €" 9.8 in) by using seatpost standard, and weighs between 9-12.5 Ã, kg (20-28Ã, Â £) depending on the configuration. The standard saddle of 2009 and the subsequent models serve as a handle for the folded bike, with the fingers of the handles at the bottom. With practice, folding and opening takes between 10-20 seconds, making Brompton popular among commuters.

Model

The models are marked with the letters of each side of the numbers to describe the type of handle bar, the number of gears and the attached factory fixtures respectively. The suffix is added to indicate the inclusion of a titanium upgrade. For example, the code model "M3R" refers to the classic "M" handle bar, "3" Ã, the speed of the tooth using the internal hub and "R" for the rear rack. The same modeling of titanium for some parts will be "M3R-X".

Addition of factory

All models may have wheels in corner shelves replaced with larger eazy wheels, to help push when folded and give heel permits larger than stock rollers. All models can choose not to have lights, battery powered lights, or two front wheel dynamo variants. The seat positions can be exchanged between standard lengths, extended or telescopic for high riders (titanium and, later, aluminum equivalents previously mounted to lighter models no longer available). Bicycles are offered in four colors at no additional cost: Black, White, Orange and Cobalt Blue. Other colors, raw lacquer, and titanium are available at an additional cost. The titanium area is not painted, in its natural titanium color. The standard Brompton saddle can be replaced by a special version of men's or men's leather from Brooks B17. The non-titanium model has braze-on fittings to hold the HP Zefal high-pressure bicycle pump supplied.

All models may have front luggage blocks mounted to carry cargo, these are fitted to the main frame (not to the fork or bar handle) to avoid steering disturbance. The hub dynamo option uses a narrow dedicated narrow-gauge XS dynamo hub mounted at the center of the front wheel and manufactured by the cheaper Schmidt Maschinenbau or hub dynamo manufactured by Shimano. Until 2009, the bottle shaped dynamo ban is used for standard permanent lighting. The new bike has a choice between a special Shimano Brompton or SON XS hub dynamos.

The full "superlight" variant uses titanium to save weight, combined with lighter wheel components. This option replaces the back triangle and front fork with titanium and other smaller parts with titanium or aluminum. The main frame structure remains steel. This increase shows the largest increase in cost of any increase, and reduces some variants to under ten kilograms of weight. The rear triangle of titanium has no provision for installing the pump, and the pump is not provided with a titanium model, saving about 75 grams (2.6 oz).

Tires can be exchanged at any point between the Kevlar-based Brompton branded tires, lighter, Schwalbe Kojak faster, or the more powerful and puncture-proof Schwalbe Marathon. While no longer factory installed, Brompton bikes initially used Raleigh Record tires and continued to do so on the lower end models until the 2000s. The aftermarket tires include Schwalbe Marathon Plus, a heavy but highly stabbed model.

Accessories

A small saddle bag can be mounted behind the saddle for the cover of Brompton and any tool or spare part. Most types of handlebar can also accommodate standard handlebar bags.

When fitted with the front luggage block, Brompton offers a choice of folding baskets, a large touring pannier (T-bag), two variants of the enlarged bike-style (S- or C-bag) flip-over bag, waterproof options are available in two colors produced by Ortlieb, a cotton duck canvas bureau known as the "City Folder" of Carradice, or an attachable leather case can be attached to a bicycle. These bags internally share a common design of luggage frames, which can also be used separately. In the case of a Carradice bag, these frames must be purchased separately from some retailers. Several other accessory brands are compatible with Brompton bikes such as the British Brooks saddle manufacturer.

History

General design changes have been introduced that can be retrofit on previous models.

Handlebar hinge
switch to jig-brazed system
Bar-clip clip
reinforced wire clips provide increased grip to secure the handle rod when folded down.
Handlebar
Two alternate handlebar designs; the original handlebar was redesigned as the 'M' type.
Titanium section
saves about 1 kilogram of combined
Dual action calliper brakes
later matches as standard for front and back wheels
Broad reach Hub
Brompton Wide-Range (BWR) Hub with wider gear distance ratio, better suited to smaller Brompton wheel sizes, since 2008
Non-fold pedals
a new non-folding right pedal designed to increase the robustness and balance the folding pedal.
notch added to prevent folding over the left folding pedal
Upright handlebar
since 2012 Style handlebar "H"

By the end of 2016, some new changes appear to be categorized as for 2017. 'M' and 'H' are replaced, turning to the designed Brompton brakes designed by the shifter bel shifter units suspended under the new handlebar. The handlebar holds the same overall height, but with a 20mm higher handlebar, means a 20mm less gain on the handlebar, and a finer curve. The 'M', 'H' and flat 'S' handles switch to using handlebar longer and removable.

The rear casting rack design is changing, with a new design that incorporates two cut-outs for the built-in luggage luggage.

This change first appeared on limited edition "Black Edition" bikes, and then on bikes delivered from November 2016 onwards.

In August 2017, the company introduced an electric bicycle or pedelec version in the UK.

Customization

Further modifications are provided by some Brompton dealers or skilled individuals, the most notable examples are:

Rear hub
Alternative hubs all tend to be wider than narrow Bromptons allowing the rear triangle, requiring extensive stretching and modification work
  • Disk Brakes
    • Frames Need modification
  • Shimano Nexus seven eight or eleven speed hubs.
  • Fourteen speeds, Rohloff Speedhub.
  • Sturmey-Archer XRF8 eight speed hub.
  • Vintage Sturmey-Archer medium or internal close-ratio, which can be screwed directly into OEM hub shell
Rear axle
Derailleur gears either in addition to, or in place of a standard internal gear hub
Bottom Bracket
  • Schlumpf Drive: Put Schlumpf Mountain Drive to the bottom bracket to provide a 2.5x reduction to choose from, thus doubling the number of gears available for two, four, six, or twelve-speed
  • Additional front derailleur chains like on a mountain bike
  • Oversize, or ellipse ("egg") ring gives higher likelihood of higher speed for highly matching riders
Front wheel hub
  • Disk Brakes
    • Front Fork Needs modification
  • The electric motor, combined with the battery bank attached to the rear rack, or stored in the front shopping cart
  • Pantour suspension hub
  • Dynamo hub. Brompton now offers XS SONS with a narrow range or alternate Shimano dynamo hub as a factory-provided standard upgrade
Baggage
  • Custom made luggage using Brompton trunk
  • The rear trunk is attached to the post-seat
Contact points
  • Leather or other handlebar handles; the replacement should be around 95-100mm wide compared to 130mm for other bikes
  • Increased Saddle: Brompton offers branded Brooks B17, but any saddle can be installed if the "Pentaclip" Brompton adapter is used

Substitution

Brompton owners and designers with appropriate engineering expertise have tried to improve the design, although there is limited scope to do so because any attached additions tend to compromise with the final folded size, weight taken or folding action.

  • "SP". In the United Kingdom, builder Steve Parry specializes in producing a variety of specially designed bikes for SP, which are based on Brompton and use many of the Brompton components. Typically, this engine may combine a seven-speed derailleur or a Rohloff 14-speed speedlift, a V-brake, carbon fiber seat backrest and suspension handlebar system, although the exact specifications will often be agreed with the buyer before building. li>
  • "Brekki" resets the upgrade device. The collection of add-ons previously offered by German cyclist Juliane NeuÃÆ'Ÿ, to turn the base brompton into a supine bike design with the cost of a larger folding package and a heavier weight. This kit does not match the current Brompton, which has a longer main frame.
  • Main Foldable Bike. The ongoing development of Leonard Rubin (in Portland, Oregon) involves the replacement of wholesale virtually any original Brompton frame component with titanium or a lightweight version. The result is a 8 pound sub bike with Brompton fold and baggage compatibility.
  • "Nano Brompton" upgrade to convert base Brompton into an electric bike by adding an electric motor hub 2-kilogram front 250 watts. The battery pack is mounted on the handlebars, or using a contact strip embedded in the modified front introduction block.
  • "Brompton E-Freedom" - upgrade to convert base Brompton into electric bicycle by adding powerful electric front hub motor to Brompton, with nanotech battery, all devices (including motor, battery, controller & throttle) just add 3.2 kg for the overall weight of the bike.

Company

In 1976, Andrew Ritchie founded the company, named after Brompton Oratory, a landmark visible from his bedroom workshop where the first prototype was built. At that time he worked as a gardener. Ritchie gained support from friends and attempted to license the design, but after five years started producing his own bike design. Production land was suspended in 1982 after Ritchie continued to explore the possibility to continue manufacturing while doing other work.

Finally in 1986, once again with the support of friends and former customers, enough was raised to continue production on a larger scale. With bank loans borne by Julian Vereker (founder of Audio Naim), production resumes in a railroad arch in Brentford. In early 1988, mass production Brompton bikes once again circulated.

Beginning 2002, when Will Butler-Adams joined the company (he became Managing Director in 2008), until 2013, production increased from 6,000 to Ã, Â ± 40,000 bikes per year. Labor increased from 24 to 190.

In March 2009, Brompton Bicycle achieved a monthly turnaround record just under Ã, Â £ 1 million; employees were awarded fish and chips. In the same month, the company stated that they expect to continue the 25% growth rate; partly activated by switching to just-in-time stocking for parts sourced from suppliers, and by asking suppliers to keep stock until needed rather than live parts for the period at the Brompton plant.

The company was awarded the Queen's Prize for Export in 1995.

In the Queen's Anniversary Awards April 21, 2010, the company was awarded two Queen Awards for the Company, in the International Innovation and Trade category. This is the second time Brompton won the International Trade Award, they first received it in 1995. It is rare for a company to receive these two awards in one year.

Will Butler-Adams, Managing Director, was awarded the Order of the British Empire by 2015. In July, plans to move the company from Brentford to nearby Greenford were reported.

Clones and permissions

In 1992, Brompton agreed with Euro-Tai in Taiwan to allow the creation of licensed copies of Brompton bicycles for distribution in East Asia. A joint venture named Neobike was later established to produce it. Brompton Bicycle in the UK will lend tools and pictures, and is paid on a per-unit royalty basis.

In mid 1992, Neobike had recruited three senior research and development employees from Dahon, another folding bike company, and began producing designs and copies other than Brompton's official design. The Brompton license contract with Euro-Tai/Neobike lasted about ten years until it expired on December 31, 2002. At this time, five senior Neobike employees have been convicted and jailed for stealing trade secrets from Dahon and Ritchie has previously stated that the franchise contract has been " reviewed ", there are quality problems with Brompton bikes built in Asia. Euro-Tai and Neobike failed to return the special tool of Brompton lent by the Brompton Bicycle. One week later following the end of the official license agreement, Euro-Tai sold its controlling stake in Neobike to YTE Manufacturing, an aluminum supplier already involved with producing frames for Neobike.

At the Eurobike trade show 2003, Neobike showed off a Brompton clone - now unlicensed - offering it to potential sellers in Europe. Photocopies of Brompton bicycles produced by Neobike were then imported into the Netherlands under the name "Scoop One" and "Astra Flex V3". Later, Neobike's interest in his bicycle-business was transferred to an entity called Grace Gallant Enterprises, for sale under the brand "Flamingo". Between 2004 and 2010, several copies were imported into the European market: to Britain under the name "Merc", to Belgium, and to Spain as "Nishiki Oxford". Taiwan-made clones produce FL-BP01-3/FL-BP01-7 model number that stands for Flamingo, "Best persuader", 3-speed/7-speed. In 2014, Grace-Galant continues to make clones for the East Asian market under the brand name Flamingo and MIT. Then the iteration clones have their frames made of aluminum, not the steel frame from the original.

Court case

After the expiry of Brompton patents, Brompton Bicycle's legal action against the Neobike/Grace Gallant has all been based on copyright and legal design laws.

Court cases were held in Groningen's civil court in the Netherlands on May 24, 2006, which ruled that the design of the Brompton folding bicycle industry was protected by copyright. In addition, the manual provided Neobike has included a direct copy of the pictures found in the user manual of Brompton. The Brompton Bicycle Limited v Rijwielbedrijf Vincent Van Ellen BV decides that there is creative flexibility in design for bikes beyond the choices it is pure pure for functional reasons; in the case of Brompton this includes the M-style handlebar, the main curved skeleton tube and the placement of the cable. Each is recorded as a different design decision that can be changed by other manufacturers without sacrificing the ability to make functional folding bikes. Therefore, the perceived level of similarity may lead to "confusion in the market" under Dutch copyright laws, Article 13. Neobike does not choose an appeal and Brompton Bicycle is granted the right to own all imported bikes that are vandalized with orders against future imports by Neobike distributors.

In June 2010, Brompton Bicycle obtained further orders against imports of unlicensed Brompton models to Spain, this time under the name "Nishiki Oxford Bicycle". The case was decided on the grounds that Grace Gallant's predecessor did not return all images and equipment of Brompton Bicycle Ltd after the termination of the previous Eurotai/Neobike franchise agreement.
