The 8 belay device is a piece of metal (usually an aluminum alloy) in the shape of 8 with one large end and one small tip. This device is useful for large surface areas that come into contact with a climbing rope to provide sufficient friction with the right techniques to use as a tool for fastening or for rappelling. A number 8 (sometimes simply referred to as 8) is used in conjunction with the climbing harness and carabiner locking to keep the climber safe and control a person's offspring or offspring (during rappelling)

Pro
Figure 8s offers a very fine controlled descent when rappelling and lowering the climber. They can be used with almost any diameter climbing rope and do not become as hot as other friction devices because of their ability to dissipate heat efficiently. The number eight can also be used with multiple ropes, which is also possible with shelves but not spindle.

Count
The number eight can not be removed from the rope without releasing the device from the harness, so it can be accidentally dropped, especially when dealing with a rebel. They also rotate the rope which is a special problem in which a rebel prevents the rope from being released. They do not provide a convenient means to temporarily lock the locks on the rebels.
