The head of the boy and the girl's head is a prominent representative student responsibility role. The term is commonly used in English education systems and in private schools throughout the Commonwealth organization.

In some British schools, the student body selects the head boy and/or the head girl of the student/student. The heads of boys and girls heads are usually responsible for representing schools at events, and therefore should be able to make public speeches. They also serve as good role models for students, and share student ideas with school leadership. He may also be expected to lead his colleagues in their duties. Deputy heads of boys and girls can also be appointed, taking daily management of prefects in several institutions, as well as maintaining schools and creating relationships between teachers and students.

Some schools in Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Singapore, UAE and Malaysia, and many in the Commonwealth of Caribbean, as well as South Africa, New Zealand and Canada, follow the same system as in the UK, have a girl's head and a boy- male or prefect head, vice head of girl/boy, prefect, captain of house, monitor and class representative. Head girls and boys help teachers and school administration. Schools in Nigeria and Ghana follow a similar system even though some schools appoint a prefect or senior prefect and senior assistant. Other terms used are "Senior Ring" (for boys) and "Senior Pin" (for girls), used in some schools such as Aden Bowman Collegiate in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
In Australia, the system is similar to the system in the UK. Almost all public secondary schools will have student councils with each year group having elected representatives. Heads of boys and girls heads are generally "chairmen" of this board and will represent schools at government or community level and will represent students at the school level.
