History

The College is named after the Scottish-born engineer and inventor of Sandford Fleming, perhaps best known for his contribution to the concept of Universal Standard Time, which was awarded a noble title in 1897 by Queen Victoria. On May 21, 1965, legislation introduced in Ontario established the College of Applied Art and Technology at the time Education Minister William G. Davis. This historic event for education in Ontario marks the beginning of what will become, about 50 years later, a group of 21 Applied Arts and Technology High School and 3 Institute of Higher Technologies and Advanced Learning. Sir Sandford Fleming College was later founded in 1967 with David B. Sutherland serving as its first president. Mr. Sutherland is the longest serving husband of the Mayor in Peterborough, Sylvia Sutherland.

Campus

Campus Peterborough

The main campus of Fleming College is the Sutherland Campus in Peterborough. Other campuses are located in Cobourg, Haliburton (Haliburton Design School of Art), and Lindsay (Frost Campus). The modern architecture of the college was designed by Ronald Thom.

Sutherland's Campus

Dobbin Farm was chosen in 1876 for what came to be called the Brealey Campus. In 1973, the first two phases of the site were opened, and in 1983 the site was named the Sutherland Campus in honor of the first president and founder of the campus. The Sutherland campus expanded, including a new campus residence in 2002 and a new technology wing in 2003.

St. Joseph at Fleming, a group of eight residential homes for 200 people, opened in 2004 and is the first long-term maintenance facility built on campus or university campus.

In 2005, Peterborough Sport & amp; Health Centers are built on campus to accommodate college athletic needs. Built in partnership with the City of Peterborough, the Health Center provides athletic and aquatic facilities for students and the community. In addition, the Fleming Sports Complex - two new artificial turf fields, changing rooms and field houses - opened on campus in October 2013.

The campus is home to the Kawartha Trade and Commerce Center (KTTC), which opened in 2014, and features Fleming's trade and technology programs.

McRae Building

In 1967, a campus opened in a renovated textile factory on McDonnell Street, and in 1968 the site was named Stewart W. Daniel's Building. The McRae Building was also built at this same property in 1976. The site is where the Fleming College trade program is but closed when KTTC opened in 2014.

Cobourg Campus

Cobourg campus opened in 1971. Today the campus offers courses on Academic Upgrades and Advanced Education/Corporate Training.

Haliburton Campus

In 1969, Haliburton School of Art became part of Sir Sandford Fleming College. In 2004 the campus moved to a new location in Glebe Park in Head Lake in Haliburton Village, and today is known as the Haliburton School of Art Design. The campus offers a full-time 14-week Art Certificate in Artist Blacksmithing, Drawing and Painting, Photo Art, Digital Image Design, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glassblowing, Jewelry, and Fiber Arts. Students may combine this Certificate program with a foundation's credit year to earn Creative and Creative Arts Diplomas. Other programs offered on campus include Expressive Art, Design and Construction of Sustainable Buildings, Continuing Education, and Academic Upgrades.

The Haliburton School of Art Design continues to run short-term summer art courses, offering a selection of over 300 courses from May to August, open to people of all skill levels.

The Haliburton Sculpture Forest is located in a campus forest area. The Sculpture Forest features over 25 permanent sculptures by Canadian and International artists.

Frost Campus

Convent of St. Joseph was the original location of Lindsay campus campus in 1967. The college obtained its own facility in 1973 and, in turn, the site was named Frost Campus (in honor of Leslie Frost). Frost Campus is the School of Environmental Science and Natural Resources Fleming, which focuses on natural resource and environmental education (including earth resources, fish and wildlife, and GIS). In 2004, the campus was expanded with new environmental technology wings.

The Frost campus has a "living wall" - the first of its kind in a campus environment - a green roof, a campus arboretum and a butterfly garden. The campus is home to two fish hatcheries, which enhance muskellunge and Atlantic salmonas part of fish restoration and conservation efforts.

The Alternative Wastewater Treatment Center (CAWT) is also based in Frost Campus. CAWT is an internationally recognized research institute conducting research in the field of water science and wastewater treatment. It consists of scientists, faculty researchers, technologists, and the association community of the academic, industrial, and private sectors.

In September 2008, Frost Campus became home to a new joint diploma degree in Ecological Restoration in partnership with Trent University. Students in this program spend two years at Fleming and two years at Trent. They graduate with Honors B.Sc. and the Ontario College Diploma in Ecological Restoration.
