A hogu is the armor worn by Taekwondo practitioners during a match. Translated into English, hogu means chest or chest protection. The hogu has been used in the World Taekwondo Federation sparring since the 1950s and is considered the most important part of sparring practice in the Taekwondo arsenal. The hogu is the most common scoring area in Taekwondo debate. The hogu is hit by the heel, the sole of the foot and the top of the foot with many kicking techniques such as a locomotive kick or a back kick, and can also be beaten with a fist. Hogu is made by companies like Adidas and Dae Do; only certain chest protective brands are approved by the WTF. Chest protection is mandatory in the WTF or Olympic competition; however, this was not used in a Taekwon-Do International Federation match.
