Plot

At 11:00 on Saturday, with 31 hours left before the wedding, Barney, Ted, and Lily cheer Robin over the news that her own mother is not attending her wedding. Barney considers this a challenge to cheer him up, claiming that he never fails in the challenge, but Lily replies that Barney never completed the challenge of taking diapers and samosas in the fall of 2012. Barney tells the story.

One night at the bar, Barney discusses with the gang the fact that the only true male/female platonic relationship is between Marshall and Robin (with fantasy showing that Marshall will not hang out with Robin even if their lives and Lily are at stake). At this point, Lily is fed up with Barney's creative game to pick up women. She challenges him to take on the challenges that he and Robin will choose - which includes getting a female number while talking like a dolphin and not using any word that has the letter E. Seeing that Barney has passed all their challenges, Lily and Robin decided to make her do the task for them by entering the challenge of taking a woman while doing a request - to buy her a diaper pack for Marvin and Samamosa for Robin. Barney buys things and then tries to play with a woman at the pharmacy; the woman is actually the future wife of Ted, who looks through her facade and calls her (with Future Ted telling her children this is "How Barney met your Mother"). Outside, the two talk about Barney's failed relationship with Robin and how he feels lost because they broke up. When Barney says he can easily seduce Robin back, she declares that if she really wants it badly, she should give it her best shot. The woman leaves him and Barney returns home, leaving diapers and samosas, to compose "The Robin."

Elsewhere, Marshall and Ted watched the match between General Washington and Harlem Globetrotters. As they watch the game (with both supporting the Generals), the two begin to talk about Ted's feelings for Robin and whether he will not chase her again. Ted assures Marshall he's not interested, because he knows Robin is not interested in a real commitment so that their relationship is just 'platonic'. Marshall tells him that it's been years now and people are changing. Ted also gets a call from his old boss, Hammond Druthers who offers Ted a job in Chicago considering his success with NAM headquarters. Ted initially refused, but eventually agreed to think about it under pressure from Druthers. Back home after the game, Ted finds Robin eating an olive that shocks him when he hates olives during their first date, and Robin tells him that he changed his outlook on them. Remembering Marshall's words, Ted called Druthers and downplayed his work by believing he still had a chance with Robin. Druthers tells Ted that the offer stays open if he changes his mind, and then at MacLaren's, Ted admits that he and Robin now only share a "platonish relationship". However, rather than immediately chasing after him, he wanted to hand it over to destiny to unite them.

Flashforwarding back to Inn Farhampton, Barney said that despite all the challenges, he still has not completed one more challenge - to cheer Robin. Now inspired by what Barney had done, Robin kissed him when Ted watched them sadly, feeling that his decision to abandon his relationship with his fate might have sacrificed his future with him.
