" Three Little Kittens " is an English rhyme rhyme, probably with roots in the British folk tradition. The poems as published today however are a sophisticated part usually associated with the American poet Eliza Lee Cabot Follen (1787-1860). With the passage of time, poetry has been absorbed into the collection of Mother Goose . Rima recounts the first three kittens to lose, then find and land, mittens them. When everything is finally set up for rights, the kittens receive their mother's approval and some pies. It has the number of People's Track Roud 16150.

The poem was published in England in 1827 in a mock review by William Ewart Gladstone, writing as Bartholomew Bouverie, at The Eton Miscellany.

A later version was published in 1833 as an anonymous addition to the volume of verses of Follen and in the United States in 1843. Follen may have developed and perfected an existing and rough version of the poem, and, in the process, made it his own. Poetry is a sophisticated production that avoiding the typical nineteenth-century children's literary moralization in favor of anthropomorphic fantasy, satirical nonsense, and wordplay.

According to Janet Sinclair Gray, author of Race and Time, "Three Little Kittens" may have its origins in the British folk tradition, but the poetry known today is a sophisticated production far from its origins. Gray supports his statement by pointing out that the cats are not small cats of folklore, but bourgeois domestic cats who eat cookies and wear gloves. Gray observes that the act of cats' mother discipline and the need for kittens to report their movements to him is also an indicator of bourgeois status. "Three Little Kittens" was associated with the Sunday school teacher and the Bostonian abolitionist, Eliza Lee Cabot Follen (1787-1860), a prominent member of the New England family and my teenage novel The Well-Spent Hour. Gray explains that "Kitten Boy" is not like Follen's typical poem, but also notes that Follen is just the type of person who would write a song like that. It is impossible for Follen to compose the "Kittens" patchwork, Gray believes, but it is somewhat more likely that he develops and refines the existing but rough version of the work. By doing that, he makes the poem himself. Although Follen rejected authorship after the first appearance of poetry in print, he continued to publish it under his name in subsequent years.

Reception

"Three Little Kittens" is very popular and quickly absorbed into the collection of Mother Goose . Unlike her female counterparts who specifically emphasize moral affirmation in their children's work, Follen put aside such affirmations in "Three Little Kittens" and emphasizes fantasies involving anthropomorphic characters, verbal games, and satirical nonsense. Poetry is considered a cornerstone in the shift from moral literature to children to romantic literature intended to entertain and entertain.
