Bose's consumer range of active noise-canceling headphones is called "QuietComfort". For industrial noise-reducing applications, Bose manufactures A20 Flight Headsets, Shuttle Shuttle Headsets, and Heads of Combat Vehicle Crews.

Development of anti-interference headphones

According to Bose, the company initiated the involvement of noise cancellation after Dr. Amar Bose made a 1978 flight to Europe, and "was trying to set up new headphones supplied by the airline and found that he could not really enjoy the sound with his roar, the engine in the background".

In 1986, Bose implemented their noise cancellation technology to develop headphones to protect the hearing of participating pilots in the world's first non-stop flight filled with fuel at the Voyager Prison.

One source notes that "almost simultaneously, US companies Bose and Sennheiser in Germany present active headsets for aircraft pilots" as cited a 1986 paper from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, on Bose products, and Funkschau 1988 (see de: Funkschau ) paper about Sennheiser.

Bose QuietComfort 3 Headphones

Bose released QuietComfort 3 Acoustic Noise Canceling Headphones ("QC3") on June 15, 2006, the first pair of on-ear headphones. Bose states that, although the ear-wrapping headphones provide greater passive noise insulation, QC3s has the same total noise reduction amount as QC2 due to increased active noise reducer. Memory foam is used to improve passive noise insulation.

The QC3 earcup is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery; Bose claims 25 hours of battery life.

These headphones are reviewed well in Sound & amp; Vision and was the first headphone to receive the Editor's Choice award, in 2006. That year, QC3 also received Gold Star Award Bronze for Premium Incentives. In 2007 they received the Red Dot Award for product design.

Bose QC3 headphones are provided by American Airlines for use by passengers in the premium flight class on multiple long haul flights.

Bose QuietComfort 15 Headphones

The QuietComfort 15 was released on August 20, 2009. A model to replace QuietComfort 2 Revision 2, both model 2 and QuietComfort 15 share the same cosmetic design ; but QuietComfort 15 uses a microphone inside and outside of each EarCup. The QuietComfort 15 offers a redesigned EarCup padding and material to provide additional passive noise reduction. Both QuietComfort 2 and QuietComfort 15 are powered by single-sized AAA batteries and have "High/High" switches to adjust sources with high and low output levels.

American Airlines provides QuietComfort 15 headphones for first class passengers and business class on multiple long haul flights. Bose has made American Airlines several special edition versions of QuietComforts, starting with the original QC1 that has a blue ear cup and an American Airlines logo on them. American Airlines became the first airline to offer QuietComforts. On July 1, 2006, JAL began offering QuietComfortà 2 headphones to First class customers on multiple flights. Air India also offers QuietComfort 3 headphones to its Premium Class subscribers for multiple long haul flights. Cathay Pacific provides First Class and Business passengers a pair of customized Quiet Comfort headphones.

Bose also offers QC15 in custom colors through third-party vendors, ColorWare specializing in customizing the look for consumer electronics. It costs $ 100 more than the standard QC15, customers can customize virtually every piece of headphones through a web-based design tool. A 30-day payback policy on custom headphones raises a 25% return fee.

Bose QuietComfort 20 In-Ear Headphones

In August 2013, Bose announced the first active noise-canceling in-ear headphone. It uses a small control module located near the jack to provide technology similar to that of QuietComfort 15. This control module also contains a rechargeable battery that drives active noise canceling. The QuietComfort 20 headphones feature enhanced, passive noise-hiding of EarTips called StayHear, similar to those found on IE2 (StayHear). The new feature that Bose also introduced on these headphones is "Aware Mode". This mode lets you press a button on the in-line remote to allow some background noise for comfort when music is played; dramatically reducing noise-cancellation to let ambient noise. Headphones can be purchased in two versions; QC20 for Android, Windows and Blackberry and QC20i is designed for Apple compatibility. Remote in-line for QC20i also has direct access control music unlike QC20.

Bose QuietComfort 25 headphones

On September 3, 2014, Bose announced QuietComfort 25 headphones, a replacement for QuietComfort 15. QuietComfort 25 has a new cosmetic design, as well as improved new audio and improved noise absorbing performance. The folding headphone design has also been upgraded for smaller new bags. Headphone ear cushions are produced with protein leather, synthetic materials, and EarCups have soft touch TPE bumpers and zinc shafts. The big change is the ability to continue using headphones after the battery is out of date, with no noise suppression feature. Bose chose to eliminate the Hi/Low switches on previous models that allow users to customize low-output devices such as MP3 players.

Customers can also customize their Bose QC25 headphones by choosing one of the 52 (glossy or matte) colors on each of the nine customizable headphone elements on the Bose site for an additional $ 100, through a 3rd party vendor, ColorWare, similar to headphone Bose QuietComfort 15 custom.

Bose QuietComfort 25 wins the Annual Voice and Vision Award "What is Hi-Fi?" For This Year, and replace its predecessor (Bose QuietComfort 15).

Bose QuietComfort 35 Wireless Headphones

In June 2016, Bose released their QuietComfort 35 headphones, adding bluetooth functionality to the QuietComfort channel with QuietComfort 25. They have slightly smoother versions of the QuietComfort 25 headphone design; the color has changed to matte black with silver option too. Stainless Steel is used for pivots of ear cups, with nylon-filled glass for headbands and ear cups as opposed to plastics, to ensure durability while remaining very light for bluetooth headphones.

They have a noise-canceling microphone that works through bluetooth to reduce ambient noise through phone calls. Just like QuietComfort 25, the included audio cable allows the use of a headphone cable either with or without the use of noise canceling feature. Similar to the Bose SoundLink model, the right ear cup has a pair of volume buttons flanking the pause/play button. Users can duplicate or three times pressing the play button to skip forward or back tracks. The right ear cup also has a power switch, which you flick to the third position to insert headphones into pairing mode, if you need it, which you do for smartphones. Headphones are also compatible with NFCs, and tapped NFC-enabled devices such as certain Android smartphones in place of NFCs located on headphones that pair them via Bluetooth.

Headphones generally receive very positive reviews, although one review mentions bass distortion above a certain volume level as a major weakness. However, headphones have received five-star reviews of both Guardian and International Business times.

Bose QuietComfort 35 Wireless Headphone II

In September 2017, Bose released the latest version of wireless headphones QuietComfort 35 which includes a dedicated Google Assistant button. Pressing this button lets users give instructions to Google Assistants using their voice on iOS or Android.

Shuttle Shuttle Shuttle

Bose makes an anti-noise flight headset that has been used in Space Shuttle, where noise cancellation features help prevent astronaut hearing damage.

A20 Aviation Headset

Released on July 26, 2010 as an upgrade to the previous "Aviation Headset X" (aka A10), they reduce the headphone noise for the pilot. It runs on two AA batteries for 45 hours or powered by an aircraft electrical system. It has Aux in for separate audio devices, and better noise reduction and clamping force is less than its predecessor. There are two models, one that includes a Bluetooth kit for the phone or one that does not include this feature.

From 2000 to 2005 the Aviation Headset X was selected as # 1 by the professional Survey Professional preference headset for five consecutive years.

Combat Vehicle Crewman Headset

In 1993 Bose introduced an active noise reduction system for use by crew in US Army combat vehicles. At the SPL 115dBA noise level, Bose noise headset cancels Bose increases speech intelligence score to 95%, compared to 80% for conventional headsets.

Triport Tactical Headset

The Triport Tactical Headset (TTH) introduced in 2004, also called Improved Tactical Headset (ITH), is an enhanced version of the Combat Vehicle Crewman Headset, currently in wide use today. This system for use in wheeled vehicles while quieter can produce 95dBA SPL or higher. It fits under the infantry ballistic helmet.

Circular headphones

AE2

On October 15, 2010, Bose released the circumaural AE2 (termed "near-ear" by Bose). Connection via a removable cable that connects to the left side of the headphone. The foam on the original headband of the original Triport AE1 has been replaced with synthetic leather and flat rotating earphones for better storage, similar to the QuietComfort model.

Supra-aural headphones

The structure of the "triport" earcup has three miniature air ducts that claim to allow the driver to travel larger before distortion.

In-Ear Headphones

Bose On-Ear headphones are Bose's first supra aural headphones and were introduced on October 12, 2006. Bose On-Ear is similar to Bose QuietComfort 3 Headphones, but without active noise cancellation. The cable is removable; 43 and 16 inch ropes are available.

Shortly after the iPhone release in 2007 Bose redesigned the OE headphone connector on a removable cable to make it compatible with iPhone.

In 2008, the Red Dot Award for product design was awarded to Bose On-Ear Headphones (note, this design award does not include audio quality in the evaluation criteria).

OE2

In October 2011, Bose replaced the Headphone On-Ear with OE2 and OE2i , which was smaller and lighter than its predecessor. The only difference between OE2 and OE2i is that i includes a special three-button iPod/iPhone specific Apple remote control with a microphone inbuilt. This remote has play/pause, volume control, previous track and next track button.

The previous model of the Bose OE2 uses a male and female extension cable, this allows the user to change the short wires without having to send the entire headset back. Then the OE2 model now uses male-to-male cables because it is more commercially available with shorter headphone lengths, and the introduction of female ports on the headset further reduces the chances of rope to break even with extensive wear.

In-ear headphones

IE2

On August 16, 2005 Bose announced in-ear headphones IE2 shallow insertion. Unlike many other in-ear headphones, they are not inserted deep into the ear canal, but fit just like the earbuds. Therefore, sound insulation is less effective than the Canalphones. The tips needed to hold this design are called "StayHear" tips by Bose. IE2's audio quality is rated ahead of other models in its price class.

Mobile headset

MIE2

The MIE2 headset is the same as IE2 headphones, but with a microphone added so it acts as a mobile phone headset.

Some complaints about In-Ears's initial production are that "i" the silicon ear tip becomes detached under certain conditions " and that " headphone stability during certain activities, such as sports, can be improved ". Bose creates a website for sending redesigned ear tips and new clips and lanyards for free.

MIE2 i

MIE2 Headset i is the MIE2 design version for Apple devices (including iPhone, iPod, iMac, iPad). It combines an in-line remote control for volume, track up/down and access to select Apple sound apps.

Bluetooth headset

On November 1, 2010, Bose released its first wireless Bluetooth headset. Ambient noise sensing automatically adjusts the volume level based on background noise so that, in theory, users do not need to adjust the volume when running between quiet and noisy environments. Signal processing seeks to amplify the caller's voice and reject the background noise, allowing the caller to be heard more clearly; However, in practice the call quality is bad for models without A2DP. Headset design is similar to IE2 Bose headphones.

The first release of Bose Bluetooth headsets was criticized for having poor call quality, lack of features and high price tags.

Bluetooth Headset Series 2

In October 2011, Bose released a second generation Bluetooth headset. It comes in both left and right ear versions, supports A2DP, and automatic volume control based on background noise levels (called "Adaptive Audio Adjustment technology" by Bose) has been revised.

The headset also has volume controls, a command button for answering calls and an on/off scroll key. The Series 2 model is rated as a "solid player" and praised for improved call quality (possibly due to A2DP entry), but criticism of the lack of features and high prices persists.

Headset discontinued on 3/31/2015
