In the United States and Canada, there are nine recognized dental specialties in which some dentists choose to practice and practice, in addition to or as a substitute for general dentistry. In England and Australia, there are thirteen.
To be a specialist requires training in a residency or advanced training program. After the residency is complete, the doctor is given a special training certificate. Many specialized courses have additional or required additional degrees such as a master's degree, such as Master of Science (MS or MSc), Master of Dental Surgery/Science (MDS/MDSc), Master of Dentistry (MDent), Master of Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) Master of Medical Science (MMSc), a doctorate such as Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent), Doctor of Medical Science/Science (DMSc), or PhD, or medical degree: Doctor of Medicine/Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MD/MBBS) specifically for maxillofacial surgery and sometimes oral medication).

- Community dental hygiene - Study of dental epidemiology and social health policy.
- Endodontics - Root canal therapy and dental pulp disease study.
- Oral and maxillofacial pathology - Study, diagnosis, and occasionally treatment of oral and maxillofacial diseases.
- Oral and maxillofacial radiology - Radiological and maxillofacial disease studies and interpretations.
- Oral and maxillofacial surgery - Extraction, implant, and facial surgery.
- Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics - Dental deformation and midface modification and mandibular growth.
- Periodontics (also periodontology) - Study and treatment of periodontal disease (non-surgical and surgical) as well as placement and maintenance of dental implants
- Child dentistry (formerly pedodontic) - Dentistry is limited to pediatric patients
- Prosthodontics - Dentures, bridges and implant restorations. Some prosthodontists continue their training in "oral and maxillofacial prosthodontics", which is a discipline associated with the replacement of missing facial structures, such as the ears, eyes, nose, etc.
Specialists in this field are designated "enrolled" (in the United States, "eligible councils") and guarantee exclusive titles such as orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, endodontic dentists, dentists, periodontists or prosthodontists after satisfying a particular locale ( USA, "Board Certified"), (Australia and New Zealand: Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, designated by "FRACDS" post-nominal), or (Canada: Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists, designated postnominal " FRCD (C) ") registry requirements.
The American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) provides annual board certification checks for qualified dentists. The dentist collaborates with a sleeping doctor at an accredited sleep center and can provide oral therapy and upper airway surgery to treat sleep-related breathing disorders. [1] While the diploma status granted by ABDSM is not one of the recognized dental specialties, it is recognized by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Some formal post-graduate formal education programs: GPR, GDR, MTP residency (high-level clinical and didactic training with intensive hospital experience) and AEGD, SEGD and GradDipClinDent programs (advanced training in clinical dentistry) are recognized but not leading to specialization. There is also a CODA (Council on Dental Accreditation) program at Orofacial Pain in over ten Dental Schools in the United States.
Other dental education is where there is no formal graduate university education required: cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, temporo-mandibular joint therapy. This usually requires the presence of one or more continuing education courses that typically last one to several days. There are restrictions that allow these dentists to call themselves specialists in this field. A specialist degree is a title that can be registered and controlled by the local dental licensing body.

- Dental anesthesia - The study of how to relieve pain through the use of sophisticated local and general anesthetic techniques has not been considered one of the recognized dental specialties. However, the Dental Accreditation Commission (CODA) is in the process of accrediting all dental anesthesia programs. On November 1, 2012, ADA House of Delegates voted to deny special recognition to the branch. Applications can be sent back within 2 years.
- Special needs of dentistry - Dentistry for those with developmental and acquired disabilities. This is a specialization recognized by the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. It has also recently been recognized as a specialization by the General Dental Council in the UK. American Board Special Care Dentistry hopes to obtain accreditation for special needs dentistry by CODA.,
- Oral Biology - Research on Dental Biology and Craniofacial. This is often a PhD program and it is very rare for a dentist to pursue this degree.
- Forensic Odontology - Collection and use of dental evidence in law. This can be done by a dentist with experience or training in this field. The function of forensic dentists is mainly documentation and identity verification.
- Geriatric or Geriodontic Dentistry - Delivery of dental care for older adults involving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of problems associated with normal aging and age-related diseases as part of an interdisciplinary team with other health care professionals.
- Oral medication - Clinical evaluation and diagnosis of oral mucosal disease, and dental treatment for medically compromised patients. This degree is sometimes combined with oral pathology or oral radiology.
- Animal dentistry, veterinary specialties - Dentistry applied to animal care.
