Counselor to the President is a title used by high-level assistants to the President of the United States and senior members of the President's Executive Office.

Current office owners are Kellyanne Conway and Johnny DeStefano.

It should not be confused with the White House Counsel office, which is the chief legal advisor to the President and White House, who is also appointed, not a nomination position and then Senate-confirmed, - unlike the attorney general or the attorney general.

Histori

The position was made during the administration of Richard Nixon, where he was commissioned in the cabinet rank. This position will be considered at the cabinet level until 1993.

During Nixon's presidency, no less than eight people held positions, with sometimes two or three "Counselors for the President".

During the presidency of Gerald Ford, the post was distributed by Robert T. Hartmann and John O. Marsh, with Rogers Morton briefly joining them in early 1976.

The position was vacant during Jimmy Carter's reign, when Carter left many unfilled White House positions (like the White House Chief of Staff) and preferred the smaller advisory corps.

Edwin Meese held that position during the first term of President Ronald Reagan, and was very influential in the White House. Meese, White House Chief of Staff James Baker and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Michael Deaver was nicknamed "The Troika" and considered the most influential adviser to the president.

Meese became Attorney General during his second term Reagan as president and the position was left blank.

The position was left empty in the first three years of President George H.W. The term Bush. In 1992 was filled by Clayton Yeutter after he resigned as chairman of the Republican National Committee.

During Bill Clinton's administration, the post became more focused on communication. Two Clinton counselors, David Gergen and Paul Begala, later became CNN political analysts.

During the George W. Bush administration, Counselors oversee Communications, Media Affairs, Speeches and the Press Office.

Under the Obama Administration, the position was initially removed and office tasks transferred to three senior advisers: David Axelrod, Pete Rouse, and Valerie Jarrett, who also holds the title of Assistant President for Intergovernmental Relations and Public Relations. On January 6, 2011, President Obama appointed Rouse as a Presidential Advisor in which he was responsible for assisting the President and Chief of Staff of the White House with day-to-day operations management of White House Staff. John Podesta was the last person to hold a position before he left to join Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign as chairman.

Immediately after the 2016 election, President-elect Donald Trump announced his intention to name the manager of his successful presidential campaign, Kellyanne Conway, as presidential advisor.
