Scientific use

Its use in psychology and sociology is very different from its daily use. In psychology, the other person is a very important person for the life or welfare of a person. In sociology, he describes a person or persons who have a strong influence on the concept of the individual self. Although significant other people's influences on individuals have long theorized, the first actual measurements of significant other people's influence on individuals were made by Archie O. Haller, Edward L. Fink, and Joseph Woelfel at the University of Wisconsin.

Haller, Fink, and Woelfel are partners of the model of attaining Wisconsin status. They surveyed 100 Wisconsin teenagers, measured their educational and work aspirations, and identified other groups of individuals who communicate with students and set an example for them. They then contact others directly and gauge their expectations for youth attainment and education, and calculate the impact of these expectations on student aspirations. The results show that the expectations of others significant are the single most powerful influences on students' own aspirations. This use is identical to the term "other relevant" and can also be found in the plural, "significant other".

In social psychology, another important person is the parent, uncle/aunt, grandfather, guardian or teacher - the one who guides and takes care of a child during the primary socialization. The other important thing is protecting, appreciating, and punishing children as a way to foster child development. This usually takes about six or seven years, after which the essentials are no longer needed, and the child moves on to a general "person" who is not a real person, but an abstract notion of what people consider good or bad.
