" To Love Somebody " is a song written by Barry and Robin Gibb. Produced by Robert Stigwood, it was the second single released by Bee Gees from their international debut album, Bee Gees 1st, in 1967. The single reached No.17 in the United States and No.41 in the UK. The B-side song is "Close Another Door". The single was re-published in 1980 at RSO Recordings with "How to Get a Broken Heart" as its flipside. The song was ranked 94th in the NME magazine "100 Best Tracks of the Sixties". It was a small hit in England and France. It reached the top 20 in the US. It reached the top 10 in Canada.
In a 2017 interview with Piers Morgan's Life Story, Barry was asked "from all the songs you have ever written, what song would you choose?" Barry says that "To Love Somebody" is the song he chose for having "a clear and emotional message".
The song has been recorded by many other artists, including Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Roberta Flack, Jimmy Somerville, Michael Bolton, Billy Corgan, Rod Stewart and Michael Bublà ©  ©.

At the request of Robert Stigwood, band manager, Barry and Robin Gibb wrote "To Love Somebody", a full-fledged ballad in Sam & amp; Dave or The Rascals, for Otis Redding. Redding came to meet Barry at the Plaza in New York City one night. Robin claims that "[Otis Redding] says he likes our material and will Barry write to him the song".
The Bee Gees recorded "To Love Somebody" at IBC Studios, London in March 1967 and released it as a single in mid-July 1967 in the US. Redding died in a plane crash at the end of that year, before recording his song. The song was recorded around April 1967 with "Gilbert Green" and "End of My Song" at IBC Studios in London, England.
Robin said, "Everyone told us what great records they thought it was, the other groups all raved about it but for some reason people in the UK do not seem to like it." Barry said, "I think the reason why it does not work here is because it's a soul figure, Americans love it, but it's not right for this country."
Barry Gibb explains in June 2001 interview with Mojo magazine:
That's for Robert. I say it unabashedly. He asked me to write a song for him, personally. It was written in New York and played for Otis but, personally, it was for Robert. He means a lot to me. I do not think it is a homosexual affection but an amazing admiration for this man's talents and talents.
Robert became the manager of Bee Gee, Robert Stigwood.
The simple title holds the chorus, "You do not know what, Baby, you do not know what, loving someone... my way of loving you" has an effect that is both heartbreaking and winning, self-pitying with unrequited love. "There is... a certain kind of light that never shines on me... You do not have to be so blind, I am a man, can not you see me? I live and breathe for you, But what good is that, If I do not have you ? ".
