Histori

Victoria was named after Queen Victoria, as 1897 was her 60th anniversary of coronation. Initially there was a dispute about the location of the site, and opened at a temporary facility in Thorndon. Finally it was decided to place it in Kelburn, where it still has a major campus. This decision was influenced by the offer of the Cable Car company from a donation of Ã, Â £ 1,000 if it was in Kelburn so that students would degrade the Cable Train from the city. Some of the Company's investors such as Martin Kennedy are supporters of Seddon, who are unwilling to relinquish land at an alternative Mount Cook Gaol site for university, although the site is widely supported in Wellington.

The foundation stone of the historic Hunter Building was founded in 1904. The original name is Victoria University College, but at the time of the dissolution of New Zealand University in 1961 Victoria or "Vic" became the University of Victoria in Wellington, giving it its own degree.

The extramural branch was established in Palmerston North in 1960. Joined Massey College on January 1, 1963. After becoming a branch of Victoria in 1961 at the University of New Zealand, the combined campus became Massey University on January 1, 1964.

In 2004, Victoria celebrated the 100th anniversary of her first home, the Hunter Building.

Victoria has grown beyond its original campus in Kelburn, with campuses at Te Aro (Faculty of Architecture and Design), and Pipitea (opposite Parliament, residence of the Law School and Victoria Business School). Victoria also hosts the Ferrier Research Institute and Robinson Research Institute in Lower Hutt, Coastal Ecology Laboratory at Island Bay and Miramar Creative Center, at Park Rd, Miramar.

In 2015, Victoria opens a new campus in Auckland to serve the ever increasing demand for its courses and expertise.

General information

The main campus is in Kelburn, a suburb on a hill overlooking Wellington's business center, where the administration and humanities & amp; social science and science faculty are based. The faculty of law and commerce and administration is on the Pipitea Campus, near the Houses of Parliament, which consists of Rutherford House, the restored Old Government Building, and the West Wing of Wellington Railway Station. The smaller campus at Te Aro is a base for architecture and design schools. The latest facility, Coastal Ecology Laboratory of the University of Victoria supports marine biology and coastal ecology research programs on Wellington's bumpy south coast.

The day-to-day administration is in the hands of the University Board, consisting of 20 persons: four elected by the Convocation Court, three elected by academic staff, one elected by the general staff, two appointed by the student union executive, four appointed by the Ministry of Education, The Council itself, and the Vice-Chancellor. The Convocation Court consists of all graduates who choose to participate. Charles Wilson, at that time the librarian of the parliamentary library head, was a member of the original council and chairman for two years.

For New Zealanders getting into most open programs, with a few exceptions. Performance Music requires an audition. There is a selection to go into the second year in degrees like LLB, BArch and BDes. BA in criminology and creative writing is also based on selection.

It is one of only three institutions (Auckland University and other Unitecs) to offer degrees in architecture in New Zealand.

Controversy

In July, 2016, a member of staff at Victoria Wellington University, Rebekah Proctor was jailed for two years and five months for cheating the university from $ 480,000 - on October 27 Proctor has filed an appeal against his sentence. In October 2016, students protested the cutting of several European languages, including the German language department losing 43% of staff. Also in 2016, Victoria University of Wellington was involved in a dispute with the Tertiary Education Union, when it was found that union members were paid less than non-union members. This led TEU to characterize Vice Chancellor Grant Guildford as an anti-union, and resulted in a one-day strike.

By the end of 2015, academics and students at Victoria University of Wellington speak at the university hosting the Israeli Defense Force forces for public lectures. The opposition to this public lecture arose from the involvement of soldiers in the Operation Protective Edge, which allegedly killed at least 2,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians.

In 2012 a Facebook page related to Victoria University Wellington students, Heard @ Vic , is in the media for many rape comments made. This includes comments such as "You have to rape a paper, man, you can not let your papers rape" and "at least ugly girls are not raped". In response to this, a spokeswoman for Victoria Victoria University said that "student safety is the main focus, and the university has partnered with the Wellington City Police and Council to raise awareness of personal safety".

In 2010 there was widespread criticism from the Victoria University of Wellington that removed the department of Gender Studies. In 2017, minors in Gender Studies are made available.

In 2018 the university management, backed by an unnamed public relations company, initiated a campaign to change the name of the university, removing the word "Victoria" from the title. The university's management has not provided any evidence to support their assertion that the name caused confusion.
