First use in print
The first use in print appears to have been in The Month magazine in 1992; However, the related term, Catholic cafeteria, has appeared in E. Michael Jones Fidelity Magazine in 1986.
Another preliminary use by Richard Holloway was in an interview with Third Way in September 2001.
You get a Christian cafeteria, a kind of shopping for ideas that you approve. They are true for the wrong reasons, because I think that once you admit that there are in large parts of the scriptures that by our standards are not only inappropriate but almost immoral - such as the justification of slavery...

Interpretation
The style of the cafeteria means choosing and choosing, as if "shifting our food trays along the cafeteria counter", refers to some Christians who make the personal choice of Christian teaching, "pick and choose the things you want and throw away the rest." This term implies that a person's religious beliefs are actually representative for their personal opinions rather than acceptance of Christian doctrine. The implied selectivity may be related to the acceptance of Christian doctrine (such as the resurrection or birth of the virgin Jesus), or attitudes to moral and ethical matters (eg abortion, homosexuality, racism or idolatry) and sometimes associated with discussion of the application of Old Testament law to people Christianity and the interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount.
The Christianity of the Canteen is somewhat related to latitudinarianism, the position that disagreements about organization and church doctrine can be accepted within the church.
As the Christian version of "cherry-picking theology", this is seen as a result of the reading of postmodern texts, where the reader goes beyond an analysis of what requires interpretation, adopting the approach in which "anything goes".
In the Christian Marketplace, Robert Ekelund's economist Robert HÃÆ'à © bert and Robert Tollison equate Christianity of the Cafeteria with self-generated Christianity, the religion of many Christians who "fit their profile of demand" and "may be Christian or based on other areas of thought ". They conclude that "Christian individualists have existed at all times."
Usage
Since the Christian cafeteria may be someone who wants to "reject parts of the scriptures they deem inappropriate and accept only the parts they like," the term can be used ad hominem, either to disqualify one's neglect of a Christian doctrine, or to cancel their advocacy from a completely different doctrine.
Equated with "Christianity Lite", it is sometimes used to deride the mass subculture of megachurches.
Cafeteria Catholicism
The term "Catholic cafeteria" is a derogatory term applied to Catholics who disagree with Roman Catholic moral teaching on matters such as abortion, birth control, premarital sex, masturbation or homosexuality. The term is less often applied to those who disagree with other Catholic moral teachings on issues such as social justice, capital punishment or fair warfare.
