Background and recording
"Road Less Traveled" was written in 2013 by Lauren Alaina, Jesse Frasure and Meghan Trainor in Nashville, Tennessee. At that time, Alaina was dealing with her parents' divorce, bulimia and her father went to rehab for alcoholism. He wanted to write a stimulating song that could inspire others through the same struggle. Trainor also experienced discomfort about her figure at the time, saying Billboard in 2014 that she wanted to tell herself and others to "love herself more". A discussion involving Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" led fellow authors to land on "Road Less Traveled" as their title. They then wrote choruses and hooks, "taking a less traveled path," first, which is very similar to "Take My Breath Away" by the '80s Berlin group.
The demo was recorded using fully programmable instrumentation. Busbee, who works as a record producer, tries to integrate synthesized instruments with the original to create a radio-friendly soundscape but in tune with the song's message. Vocals were recorded in the summer of 2014. Alaina underwent vocal surgery on August 12, 2014 and re-recorded the main vocals on the song after his recovery. Her vocal range expanded after her operation with Alaina reaching a great tone over the track bridge she had fought for before.

Composition
"Road Less Traveled" is a rock-country song that lasts three minutes and thirty-six seconds. It starts with a banjar that is played by "licking" with clasps and "drumming" drums. Musically, the track follows a "four-on-floor" rhythm that is stressed by two banjo and mandolin "twisted" around the "flood" synth line. Busbee producers aim to integrate authentic instrumentation with synthetic sound for country and pop style blends.
The lyrics, the song is about "being comfortable in your own skin" and talking to the journey of self-acceptance. The titular lyrics are inspired by the popular Robert Frost poem, "The Road Not Taken", in which the narrator chooses the "rarer path" at the crossroads. The self-image is discussed in the first verse with reference to the size of clothing and Alaina begs the listener not to "let the world decide what is beautiful," referring to Alaina's previous struggle alone with body image. Other lyrics emphasize the importance of staying true to yourself, or "marching to a different drum rhythm" and "just having it". Critics have referred to the song as "the national anthem" because of its empowering message comparing it to Martina McBride "This One's for the Girls" and co-writer of Meghan Trainor "All About That Bass".
Critical reception
Billy Dukes of Taste of Country writes that Alaina "never sounds more confident" in her "Critic's Pick" reviews about singles. In particular, Dukes praised the singer's approach to "anthemic" and "uplifting" messages. In a review of EP, Jason Scott of PopDust praises the song "undeniable" on "Road Less Traveled" and considers the song "one of his most compelling performances".
